DKY: A Southern California Surf Film
Waves, Gloom, and Southern California
Filmed by Rick Perez
Made during the gloomy mornings between May 2020 and July 2020, filmmaker Rick Perez and surfer Neil Levin create an ode to iconic Southern California surf spots in DKY: A Southern California Surf Film.
“We wanted to make a different kind of surf edit,” says Rick Perez. “People don’t tend to associate Southern California with gloomy weather, but along the coast, overcast mornings are common, especially during the months of May and June.”
His first time filming a surfer,, Rick learned quickly that patience is important. “I really had to wait with Neil in shooting the waves. Sometimes I would wait a long time until we would get a good shot. Sometimes I didn’t need to wait. It’s all part of the experience.”
