Alien Abduction is Sexy

Los Angeles band Deux Nomiz talk about bringing you into another world, the fun side of music, and their EP, “Alien Seduction”.
Los Angeles, USA
Who is Deux Nomiz and what is your music all about?
Salutations! Deux Nomiz is a husband and wife duo or if you’d like 2x space punk from Planet Nomi!
Our music is influenced by the Devolutional 80s New Wave and Sonic Boom Garage Rock. And takes inspiration from bands like The Plastics, Indochine, Lou Miami and consists of elements from Italo Disco and 80s Japanese underground scene.
Our name derives from Klaus Nomi and his alien artsy troupe from the 80s which is a bold statement of unique thinking and not fitting in with pop standards.
How is this project different from your previous projects? How does it show your growth as artists?
Charlie: For me, this project reflects everything I wanted to do: endless freedom of choice and fun. Valery inspired me to go back to the basics and rip off the cheesiest songs I knew and not be serious in anyway.
Valery: For me, other projects never really meant anything serious; Deux Nomiz is special and based on mutual connection with this one! Lots of experiments, making unique instruments and pedals, creating fun merch and props which is a blessing honestly.
You just released an EP, ‘Alien Seduction’. What kind of story are you telling?
Valery: BEING ABDUCTED BY ALIENS IS SEXY!
Kidding, our debut EP is a combination of fancy-dancy* riffs and cheesy goodness of the 80s. We love simplicity and fun side of the music which modern scene is lacking a lot.
Charlie : The song “Alien Seduction” is really about how I get falling in love with Val, the overall feeling of losing control and embracing it.
We’re openly calling out our biggest influences like Lou Miami in “Miami luv” including the rototoms solo and “huh-has!”of Mike Maureen’s “Love Spy”. We feel like these songs are completely underrated and we wanted to shine light on those artist that bring us so much joy.

What were some of the highs and lows while making this?
Valery: When we started this project 2 years ago when I was in Russia and that was the hardest part for me. We would FaceTime each other and brainstorm on songs for hours, send each other stems. Feeling in love and excited to make this happen no matter how far we were from each other was the main driven force.
We only had 3 days to record/mix/master the “Alien Seduction” EP so we had to record live off the floor and get creative on the go. I’m a recording engineer so I had to be in a working and musician mode at the same time. But you know, when you’re creating something special with people who click with you on every level obstacles become a fun journey.
The coolest thing tho was little epiphanies we got during the recording! For instance, our drummer Chris Wilson came up with an incredible rototoms solo on Miami Luv in literally 1 take! Or that we used the cheapest Casio keyboard from the 80s for our lead synth in Top Secret Nomi Man.
Charlie: For me, building props and miniatures in the film industry for years and finally building the spaceship bridge for the album cover with Val was a huge highlight; doing something I love for ourselves and the freedom that came from that instead of for a client.
You recently threw the release show for ‘Alien Seduction’ at the Los Angeles venue Non-Plus Ultra. How does your live performance stand out from the other bands in L.A.?
We adore the old spirit of the music tv shows from the 80s like “Top of the pops” and various 70s Japanese shows like “Techno-Pop” as well as the amount of effort each band or artist would put in just to stand out back in the days.
We wanted to prove a point that putting in that extra effort to transport people into a whole other world is really worth it. It makes people at the show feel a bit special and is also a lot of fun for us on the creative side.
For the show, we covered the cyclorama stage with checkerboard vinyls, made individual platforms for each member to creat that classy 60s feel and invited Go-go dancers!
Cherry on the top of our performance was a surprise solo by Bona Vega. At the end of our cheesiest italo-disco song “Pleasure Dome”, he popped out of the green room in pink fishnets and leather thong and performed a killer guitar solo. How cool is that!
What’s next for you?
At the moment we are sticking to Covid restrictions but we really want to tour, especially in Europe. Right now we’re experimenting with new songs with our synth player Billy for our future album and trying to sing in French and Japanese which has been a fun challenge. Our main priorities right now is to release a music video and keep designing new merch. Recently, we did a collaboration with our fav local brand Animal Crackers with our sunglasses called “Nomi Visions”
