Raw Connections
What got you into photography?
Traveling is what started me off..
I was traveling a lot in my mid 20s, going to crazy parts of the world like Mexico, Guatemala, Eastern Europe ect.. I began just taking travel snaps. I enjoy sharing what I notice, what I see and experience. Now I never leave the house without a camera.
How has being a photographer changed the way you view the world?
I’ve always been very observant, but since delving into street photography there isn’t much I don't see. When I look at people I find interesting I automatically think about ways I would shoot them.. I see interesting beautiful things everywhere.. I guess that’s how I see life also. There is beauty there if you are looking for it
How would you describe your style? What makes it unique?
My style is raw. My photographs are far from perfect and they’re not meant to be.. People aren’t perfect and either is life. My photographs are life.
What are some things you have learned since being a photographer?
I’ve learned that I have a gift. My gift is my unique way of seeing the world and my ability to connect with others. Photography has taught me to push myself, to be brave in my pursuit to live a happier life. It’s taught me that the best version of myself is the one that creates and gives. I’ve learnt that removing my own wall creates creative opportunities, growth and connection with others. Human connection is the most important thing in life.
Tell the story behind one of your images
My portrait of Stevie ( tattooed guy eating an icy pole) I met Stevie on a balmy summer’s evening while walking down Chapel Street in Melbourne. Stevie was shirtless in the middle of the road yelling at 3 police officers trying to detain another man.. A large crowd had formed and watched as the policeman arrested the guy across the road. Stevie turned to the crowd and yelled “who the fucks going to buy me an icy pole” I asked him his name and he answered “Steve” I bought Steve a lemonade icy pole and he explained to me that he’d just got out of prison 3 days ago.. That he lives on the streets and suffers from mental issues. Once I became comfortable I just took a photo of him as he stood there talking. It captured him in perfect candid. He has some of the most amazing tattoos I’ve seen. A true Aussie battler.
What is the art scene in Melbourne like? How does the city and its inhabitants influence your work?
Melbourne’s art scene is growing I feel it’s a little cliquey but people will show support if they dig it. There are some great organizations pushing emerging artist around the city. There are plenty of street art, exhibitions and parties ,you just have to do your research.
Out of all of the places you've visited, which one was your favorite to photograph?
I visited Mexico just before I started photographing my travels! This would of been the best. Albania was great, very raw and beautiful.
What do you use to shoot?
For the moment I only shoot 35mm and 120 film but will be moving into digital for commercial work purposes. Film photography will always be my go to medium tho and I’ll continue to experiment with it.
I have 2 cameras that get used the most atm..My CanonAE1 and my Contax T2. AE1 is a great workhouse and my T2 never leaves my side.
Do you have a favourite Photographer?
Davide Sorrenti is one of my favs. Beautifully honest in his work. RIP
What are you currently working on? What’s next for you?
I’m trying to move away from classic street photography and get heavily involved in portrait.
I have a solo exhibition coming up mid this year where I’ll be showcasing a series of portraits so I’ll be working on that as well as my website and commercial work.
