Founded in 2009 by transgender activist Bamby Salcedo, The TransLatin@ Coalition is an organization that advocates for the rights and well-being of trans and gender-nonconforming Latinx individuals. Reckless spoke with Marketing and Communications Coordinator Jimena Sandoval about the Coalition’s joys and struggles over the years, participating in Long Beach Pride, and empowering the community.

The TransLatin@ Coalition started in 2009. How did it begin? What is your overall mission?
The TransLatin@ Coalition was founded in 2009 by transgender activist and advocate Bamby Salcedo. Recognizing the urgent need for a space that addresses the unique challenges faced by trans, gender nonconforming, and intersexu (TGI) individuals, Bamby Salcedo established the coalition as a response to the lack of support and resources available at the time. The organization was born out of Los Angeles, California, and has since grown to be a prominent voice in the LGBTQ+ advocacy landscape.
The overarching mission of The TransLatin@ Coalition is to advocate for the rights and well-being of trans and gender non-conforming Latinx individuals. It seeks to create a world where this community can thrive without discrimination, stigma, or violence. Through advocacy, education, community building, and collaboration, the coalition works tirelessly to promote social change, amplify the voices of its members, and create safe spaces where they can embrace their authentic selves.
How has it grown since 2009?
Since its founding in 2009, The TransLatin@ Coalition has experienced significant growth in its reach, influence, and impact. The organization has expanded its programs and initiatives, collaborated with various multination, regional, and grassroot organizations, companies, individuals, and we influenced policies, and elevated the visibility of trans, gender nonconforming, intersex individuals. Through its advocacy, education, and community-building efforts, The TransLatin@ Coalition has played a vital role in addressing the unique challenges faced by this community and fostering positive change.
What have been some joys and challenges that the organization has faced throughout the years?
Throughout its journey, The TransLatin@ Coalition has experienced the joy of building a supportive community and witnessing positive change for trans and gender nonconforming, intersex individuals. Celebrating milestones like policy advancements and increased visibility has been a source of inspiration. However, the organization has also faced challenges such as advocating for equitable rights, overcoming discrimination, and addressing the intersectional struggles that its community members often encounter. Balancing these joys and challenges, the coalition continues to drive forward its mission with resilience and determination.
The organization has celebrated weddings and we have honored tribute to our siblings at their funerals.
How was Long Beach Pride? What sort of planning went into being part of the parade?
Long Beach Pride has been a significant event for The TransLatin@ Coalition, providing an opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness for the trans, gender nonconforming, and intersex community. Planning for the parade involves coordinating participation, designing vibrant floats, ensuring safety measures, and creating engaging materials to showcase the coalition's mission. It's a chance to foster visibility, unity, and solidarity, as well as to connect with a diverse audience and amplify the voices of those often marginalized. The experience of being part of the parade serves as a platform for advocacy and empowerment within the LGBTQ+ community.

What’s next for the Coalition?
The TransLatin@ Coalition continues to advance its impactful mission with a focus on various key areas. This includes further advocacy for policy changes that benefit TGI individuals, expanding educational initiatives to raise awareness and promote inclusivity, and fostering partnerships to amplify their reach and influence. The coalition will continue to organize events, workshops, and campaigns that empower the community and create spaces for dialogue. As it moves forward, The TransLatin@ Coalition remains committed to achieving greater equity, representation, and rights for its members while advocating for a more inclusive society as a whole.
