Storytelling Over Technicality
Photographs by Cristian Sanchez
When taking a photograph, Southern California surf and skate photographer Cristian Sanchez is very particular in what he wants. “I tend to look for open spaces, potential motion, and light,” Cristian explains, “I like taking photos when it's on the darker end when it's very dramatic and moody. Silhouettes are positive for me too.”
Although he knows exactly what to look for, not every image comes out the way he wants. “I actually suck at taking photos,” he admits. “Many may not know this but a lot of my photos come out shitty. It is very rare that I take a photo that is exposed correctly and composed the way I want it.”
Many photographers may see this as a weakness, but not knowing how the image will turn out is actually Cristian’s strength. “I am not one to get into the technical side of photography, “ he says. “For me, the quality of the photos I produce doesn't always have to be up to par with everyone else's standards. I feel if a photograph is visually storytelling on it's own it beats quality any day. If that's all you care about in a photo then you're not taking photos.”
