Lose Your Mind
glitter, dance moves, and counting stars
Reckless management artist Neil Levin shares the video to his latest single, “Lose Your Mind”. He opens up about manifesting works of fiction, being alone but happy, and living a night he will remember forever.
Los Angeles, USA
Who is Neil Levin and what is your music about?
Neil Levin is me, the music is about the meaning of life. Not gonna go anymore cliché with that statement. The goal from the beginning was to break open the doors of perception and give people some good noise to realize themselves. I intend to capture what made music back in the day so real and soulful. Every song has a little piece of me in it and in turn, I hope it makes people feel something. I’ve made the self sacrifice to write these songs that in turn have manifested themselves in both positive and negative ways. There’s a lot of energy that gets put into music when you’re doing it from the heart and sometimes it can be dangerous. Every song I wrote about initially was fiction, but then the things I was writing about ended up manifesting themselves, so now I’m a bit careful with what I write about.
"Lose Your Mind" is your first solo single of 2021. What is the story behind the song?
I got really into dance pop/disco when I was writing/producing it and I wanted to paint a picture of a night. This night involves dance floors, glitter, and good music. The goal of every night at the club, whether people admit it or not, is to end up with a girl. My vision of what happens with that girl after the night ends is stargazing on the hood of her car, feeling her energy, and having one of those moments you remember. I always wanted a girl to pick me up off my feet and take me on an adventure and I feel like the sweetest thing, and the emotional high point of this dream night is falling asleep in her arms, on the hood of her car, counting stars, drunk AF.
What makes "Lose Your Mind" different from the songs off your previous album, "I Want Blue Roses On My Grave"?
It’s still blues, that’s important to me, it’s got the traditional blues progression, but it’s dancier, and more up beat. It’s scientifically designed to make you move. I wanted it to have emotion without sending you on a rollercoaster. You still feel something in the story, but you can also mindlessly listen to it and well… lose your mind.
How does this single show your growth as an artist?
I think that’s for the true fans to decide, I keep making music based on what I listen to and what I’m into and whether there’s growth in there musically, it’s up to the third person point of view ro figure out. My production has definitely come a long way from using iPhone garageband and 8-track recorders.
You are premiering the music video to "Lose Your Mind". How does this video reflect the mood of the song?
I think it gives you an internal glimpse of the song. I’m singing about a night with a bunch of people, but I’m alone in the video and I think that reflects where I’m at in real life. I’m alone, I’m single, but I’m happy. You’re never really alone, you have people that care about you, and I do, but this song comes from an isolated state, and I think the video depicts what goes on in my mind, from god’s point of view, if you will. Plus, people that know me, know I like to party, and dance, and know I don’t really give a fuck what people think of me while I’m dancing and making a fool of myself, so now the world can see those dance moves, or at least get a glimpse…
What was the process behind making the video? Any stories?
My manager Rick had a great idea and vision, he rented out an amazing studio, made me feel like a real rockstar, and we just did work, but it was fun so it didn’t feel like it. We then did some extra shooting and stuff at his pad and got his roommate’s (who are awesome, and talented in their own respects) to help out with makeup and lighting, etc. It was a great experience definitely hope to keep making music, so I can keep starring in music videos.
What's next for you and the song?
I got a ton of music I’ve been sitting on for over a year (even while I was making Blue Roses). All I wanna do is hit your ears with it. Album will be here before we know it, but I got a cookie crumb trail of music for you guys to get your taste buds watering.
