Nothing Has Changed

Modern Nostalgia
Photographs by Larry Niehues
In his latest book, ‘Nothing Has Changed’, photographer Larry Niehues documents the people and places that represent America as it once was.

What is your story as a photographer? When did you start shooting, when did you first want to make photography your career, and who are you as a photographer now?
I started photography back in France in 2007 shooting for my brother Charles clothing brand ( http://www.fatboy-clothing.com )
I really started to give a shot as a career in 2010 when I moved to the states. Today I’ve been wearing two hats as a photographer, commercial and artist.
Someone who was born and raised in France, how do you think your perspective of the American landscape is different from someone who was born and raised in the US?
I think I have a different perspective as a foreigner, I didn’t have that kind of landscape in the south of France obviously and it gives me a fresh eye. I also always been nostalgic of the old America seen in the movies, books and stuff like that.

Before this project, what was your view on American life? How has your view changed, if at all?
All I knew about America was the city of Los Angeles, where I’ve been living for the past 10 years. My view has sort out changed as America is such a big a country and is different in every state which make it really interesting. It also make feel like you travel in a different country sometimes
You said in the Adventure Handbook interview that you love the vintage feel of old America. Which part of the U.S. keeps that mood/feeling/aesthetic the most? Why do you think that is?
I do love it ! That’s what made me want to move here. The good thing is that you can find this old America everywhere, it such a blessing to have it around still nowadays and a souvenir from the past. I would say state such a Mississippi, Texas, Tennessee etc... has that landscape very present still!

From this project, what have you learned about yourself as a person and as an artist? How have you changed?
I learned how to put myself in somebody else’s life and document it.
What's next for you? Another project?
After Nothing Has Changed, I want to do book series still focused on America. I’m currently working on the next one about Mississippi with my good friend Brooks Hall, as a writer.
