Futuristic Chrome Bodies
Nigerian Art Director and Stylist Magapls shares s o r a y a m a, a photography project inspired by the work of artist Hajime Sorayama.
In explaining the influence behind s o r a y a m a, , Magapls says, “It is a fusion of Sorayama’s signature metallic sensuality and an Afro retro-futuristic vision. Some images directly reference Sorayama’s iconic paintings, reimagining his hyper-stylized, dreamlike figures through an Afrofuturist.”
Conceptually, Magapls sought to bring his own vision into a futuristic existence. “Blending nostalgia with futurism, I explore a world where chrome bodies, vintage aesthetics, and deep melanin tones coexist,” he explains, “ The shoot plays with light, reflections, and textures, creating an atmosphere that feels cinematic. Through Sorayama, I recontextualize the fantasy of perfection, power, and beauty within an African narrative.”
