Los Angeles, USA
Who is Monokoi and what is your music all about ?
Monokoi is an extension within my path as a musician. During the last years I've been part of several projects but now I wanted to create this character behind to express the sounds and influences that have surrounded me. Also, it's the first time that I'm singing which is a really personal challenge. These first two songs "Abre Los Ojos Y Grita" and "Salto Al Vacío" are a sneak peek with groovy bass lines as to what's in store on my first album as a solo artist. It's been a great journey since I left Colombia. The opportunity to share experiences with musicians from Thailand, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, India, China, Japan, Australia and the US, it has been a unique moment in my life to connect and understand others perspectives from different cultures. For that reason I chose Monokoi's name which means nomad, migratory.
What is the story behind your latest single, “Salto Al Vacío”?
Salto al Vacío is a song that invites you to take risks and jump into the void. Follow your dreams and evolve giving a positive message and saying hey , don't procrastinate, do the things you love, and do it now because life happens once.
What kind of process went into making the video?
I like to record samples and put them into my songs, then connect with the music video. The first single "Abre Los Ojos y Grita" has a train as a main character. "Salto Al Vacío" got a similar process because I recorded clock sounds and then I wanted to put them as an icon; My good friend Rick Perez has been my partner in crime making these videos. We have created ideas together and then go with the flow, listening to the song and understanding what the song and the lyrics need to be shown.
Were there any challenges or fun times while filming?
Many (lol). We tried to make different angles in one day, however It was fun when we arrived at home and then realized we needed more footage. We thought about shooting one day, actually it was three days. A funny moment was when we were at the beach, it was super windy, I was frozen and Rick had his camera protecting it against the sand. At the end we could take amazing shots there.
How does the video reflect the mood of the song?
The clock means everything in this song and the video tells us a story about the time you waste, things you postpone. Music is happy and groovy and what better way to show this groove with California and its palm trees in the background.
What’s next for you?
Working on new music and an album coming out in October 2021.
