What is this teaser for?
This is a teaser for my upcoming film Bask: Volume I. It's a surf film that takes a look at the University of Otago student surf scene and party culture.
Which locations have been your favorite to film and why?
There's this one wave we've been to a couple of times now that's several hours south of Dunedin and it's honestly one of the most astonishing places I've been to. It's just such a wild, rugged, and remote location to be at. If you went straight out to sea you'd eventually hit the south pole so its a pretty cold and eery location to film at. When you're there you just get the sense that you're coming close to the edge of the world. It makes you feel just so insignificant like mother nature is surrounding you in every direction wanting to show you what real, raw energy is.
What are your direct inspirations in filming and putting this together?
I'd say I've always been quite inspired by Stab Magazine and all of the films they've put out over the years. I really like how they've got their own unique style of looking at the whole surfing scene and it's definitely inspired me. I've also been going back and watching a lot of old surf films from the early 2000s and just analyzing how those classics were put together.
What have you been learning while making this?
This whole year has been a massive learning progress for me and I personally feel like I've definitely taken some steps forward in terms of the way of frame things. I've been really privileged to have worked with some really talented lensmen this year like Oscar Harrington and they've been generous enough to give me pointers in terms of positioning and I feel like this influence has defiantly rubbed off on me. I'm definitely at a point where I feel I'm able to get the most out of the camera and set up I have which I don't think I would have been able to say 6 months ago.
Get ready for Bask; its gonna blow your socks off!
